Session Title: Workers’ Compensation 101: Core Concepts for Legal, Claims, and Clinical Professionals

Charles Showalter is an attorney with Corridorlaw Group Iowa, P.C., where he practices workers’ compensation law primarily on behalf of employers and insurers. He has been licensed to practice law since 2011 and began practicing Iowa workers’ compensation law in 2013. For nearly the past decade, his work has focused almost exclusively on workers’ compensation matters. Although he has experience representing both claimants and defendants, his current practice is concentrated on defense side representation.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Identify the foundational legal principles governing Iowa workers’ compensation claims, including compensability, benefits (including medical), and dispute resolution.
- Understand the respective roles and responsibilities of attorneys, adjusters, employers, and nurses/nurse case managers in the life cycle of a workers’ compensation claim.
- Recognize common procedural milestones in Iowa workers’ compensation cases, from injury reporting through resolution.
- Apply workers’ compensation concepts to real-world claim scenarios involving medical care coordination, claim management, and legal decision-making.
